DHL and Huawei are integrating NBIoT chipsets for their solutions, which use common cellulartelecommunications frequency bands such as LTE, to achieve simpleand cost-effective implementation. The vehicle detector is embeddedin these chipsets without any infrastructure investment. Inaddition, data is transmitted using existing public base stations, which have been upgraded to support NB IoT. Within each dock, DHLSupply Chain is now able to automatically collect clear dockavailability in real-time, providing visibility for dispatchers anddrivers. When a truck arrives, its driver registers through anapplication on his phone, receives a queue number and estimatedwaiting time. Then, the yard management system will automaticallyfilter the availability of the dock and provide real-time statusupdates to each driver through the application. Once the dock isidle, the driver will be notified to continue accordingly. Throughthis method, inbound trucks can be prioritized according to theneeds of the manufacturing site and unloaded at the most suitableport. It reduces the average waiting time of drivers by half from40 minutes, and with timely arrival of materials and appropriateoptimization of resources, the risk of manufacturing delays issignificantly reduced.
"By 2025, the Internet of Thingshas the potential to bring up to 1.77 trillion euros in added valueto the international logistics industry. We hope to work withHuawei on this path to develop cellular based IoT technology thatcan connect multiple devices over long distances. Our goal is toachieve a more integrated logistics value chain and enhancecustomer experience through greater connectivity," added Dr. MarkusVoss, DHL Supply Chain Information and OperationsOfficer.
The concept validation of DHLwill continue until the end of September and is expected to beenhanced through additional features such as automatic licenseplate recognition and geofencing. It marks another milestone inDHL's series of strategic IoT projects, such as the launch of IoTcockpits in smart warehouses in Europe and pilot projects inAsia.
